Ru Marshall (Robert(a) Marshall) is a nonbinary visual artist, writer, and curator. In both their writing and visual work they are concerned with the interactive nature of perception and the construction of gender and other social realities. They have exhibited their paintings, photographs, and videos at venues including Participant Inc, Studio 10 Gallery, Baxter Street, Richard Anderson Fine Arts, Derek Eller Gallery, Thread Waxing Space, Bronwyn Keenan Gallery, White Columns, Art in General, Triple Candie, Caren Golden Gallery, Amy Lipton Gallery, Peter Kilchmann Gallery, Wessel O’Connor Gallery, Maryland Art Place, Marymount Manhattan College, Centro Cultural Ricardo Rojas, Paula Cooper Gallery Annex, PS 122 Gallery, Art and Idea, and other venues. In 2021, they curated Facts of Light, an exhibition at Cathouse Proper in Brooklyn.
Ru is the author of the forthcoming biography, Carlos Castaneda: American Trickster and the novel A Separate Reality which was nominated for a Lambda Award for debut fiction. Their prose, poetry, and translations have appeared in Salon, The Evergreen Review, N + 1 Online, The Barcelona Review, The Kenyon Review, Your Impossible Voice, Another Chicago Magazine, Michigan Quarterly Review, Confrontation, Ducts, Foliated Oak, Coe Review, Event, and numerous other publications. They have received fellowships and residencies from MacDowell, Yaddo, The Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Ragdale, the Banff Centre, and the New York Foundation for the Arts. They have twice been nominated for a Pushcart Prize.
