Bio/Statement:

Martina Bábinová is a curator, art historian, and art educator who is based in Nové Zámky, Slovakia. She graduated with a Master’s Degree in art history from Comenius University in Bratislava in 2016. Since then, she has been working at the Ernest Zmeták Art Gallery in Nové Zámky. Throughout the years, she has been responsible for a diverse range of tasks, including curating exhibitions of contemporary art, creating and implementing art education programs for various target audiences, managing social media, managing the gallery’s collection, coordinating concerts featuring classical and contemporary music and organizing other cultural events. She is a member of Slovak Galleries Council.

She is interested in researching the relationships between making an exhibition and implementing various strategies to effectively communicate the message to the public through art education programs. The space, where contemporary art and art education meet, offers a platform that allows viewers to gain new perspectives on the world. In her curatorial practice, she focuses on visual art and enjoys exploring various forms of media. She prepared several exhibitions of emerging artists in collaboration with various studios from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava (Studio of Illustration and Printmaking, Studio of Fiber Art, Studio of Industrial Design). Additionally, she curated exhibitions showcasing contemporary artists who explore themes such as transience, fragility, the passage of time, personal narratives, the preservation of memories in different forms of media, landscape painting and crossing the boundaries of the visual surface.

Support: Martina Bábinová’s residency is made possible with support from Malý Berlín, the Consulate General of Slovak Republic in NYC and the Slovak Arts Council.
