Bio/Statement:

Dana Nechmad’s practice is an ongoing, medium spanning endeavor in which she aims to unravel the physical, psychological and philosophical construct which is the human body. At the core of her practice is the tenuous relationship between interiority and exteriority; what is seen and what is felt. Evolving across multiple geographies, fields of knowledge and mediums, her practice includes painting, textile work, ready made and installation. Different approaches through which she explores ways of embodiment and representation.

Originally schooled in oil painting and life-drawing, this very traditional masterful education instilled her with an appreciation for technique, which she alternatively employs and challenges in her varied studio practice. Progressing from canvas to textile, Nechmad utilizes bleaching, dying, embroidering, sewing and de-constructing on both fabrics and garments, further exploring the body’s relationship to material and spatial form. Her paintings and textile works complete one another, with the first looking on from the outside, and the other seeking to penetrate inward.

In 2018-2019 she participated in the FIELD/WORK Residency, Chicago Artists Coalition, Chicago, IL. In 2019 Nechmad founded the experimental artist-run Pen Incest Art Publication alongside artist Samir Nahas. Nechmad exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions in various international settings including: ‘Woman, Womyn, Womxn’, a duo show with David Heo, Detroit Art Week, Detroit, MI (2019); ‘In Tension’ at The Bee in the Lion Gallery, NYC (2019); ‘Mother and Child’ at Almacen gallery in Jaffa (2022) and ‘Stepping Stones’ at Loushy Art Project space in Tel Aviv (2022). Her work can be found in the Dubi Shiff Art collection, LunArt Collection, Joan Flasch artist book Collection, Rappaport Family collection and more. She is the recipient of the New Artist Society Merit Scholarship (2016-18), New American Painting #131 (2017), and the Earl and Brenda Shapiro Center for Research and Collaboration grant (2018).
