Bio/Statement:
André Ricardo’s compositions present a broad repertoire of images from his childhood that merge with its landscape and resignify itself in everyday experiences. The paintings tend to be iconic and ambiguous with a gesture of suspension of time, inviting the observer to project their own imagery repertoire.
The artist realized a powerful field of investigation around an ancestral plastic heritage that crosses André Ricardo as a Latin American, Brazilian and Afro-descendant. These aesthetic manifestations go beyond the canonical references of art historiography, which have expanded his range of possibilities for thinking about painting. He paints the Brazilian vernacular through images of nature, architecture and symbols based on a sophisticated underlined plastic intelligence.
The bright and festive chromatic vocabulary that characterizes the artworks are directly linked to the use of egg tempera, a technique that André Ricardo has been researching for about ten years. The painting begins in the process of choosing the linen or wood for support and the priming. This complex pre-industrial process allows the artist for a deeper sensitivity towards colors, expanding his control over their effects on the surface.
André Ricardo is represented by Galeria Estação and has a degree in Fine Arts from the University of São Paulo. In 2015-2016 he held the solo show Campo a través during his residency at Addaya Centre di Art Contemporani, in Mallorca, Spain. Other notable solo exhibitions include André Ricardo – Pinturas (Galeria Estação, São Paulo, 2021); Campo Limpo (MARP – Museu de Arte de Ribeirão Preto, 2021), Elemento Vazado (Galeria Pilar, São Paulo, 2015); Show of Annual Program (CCSP – Centro Cultural São Paulo, 2012).
The artist has participated in several group exhibitions in Brazil and internationally, including Panorama de Arte Brasileira, MAM (Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo, 2022); PretAtitude – Emergências, Insurgências, Afirmações – Arte Afro-Brasileira Contemporânea (SESC SP – Serviço Social do Comércio, São Paulo, 2018-2020); Y Ella Guarda Una Piedra de Cada Lugar Que Ha Visitado (Galeria Juan Silió, Madrid, 2020); Peripheral Circulation (Fundació Sa Nostra Caixa de Balears, Palma de Mallorca, Mallorca, Spain, 2020).
André Ricardo was nominated for Prêmio Pipa in 2017. In 2011 he was awarded the Prize at 36 ° SARP – Art Salon of Ribeirão Preto.
