Lu Yang Arcade, the first New York solo exhibition of the Shanghai-based artist Lu Yang (b. 1984), presents some of her key projects since 2011 and new works commissioned for the exhibition that feature fantastical, often morbid visions of death, sexuality (or a-sexuality), illness, and neurological constructs of both real life-forms and religious icons. An experimental retrospective that captures her interest in games and virtual realms as sites for manipulative, provocative, and critical possibilities, the show transforms the storefront of Wallplay (118 Orchard St.) into of a vintage arcade featuring interactive games, videos installations, and a shop of bizarre objects—including candy-hued cancer cell jewelry. Lu Yang Selected Videos will be screened at Ventana224 (244 N 6th street), tackily decorated to simulate a video rental.
In conjunction with the solo exhibition, Lu Yang will produce—in collaboration with acclaimed composer Du Yun—a special performance derived from her Cancer Baby project (2014) at the FIELD MEETING (October 26, 2014), key program of the Asian Contemporary Art Week 2014, and an artist talk/panel on October 29, 2014 at Residency Unlimited that takes a closer look at a practice at the intersection of bio-art, ludic aesthetics, and social engagement, examining the various facets that inform her creative process: neuroscience, religion, and being immersed in the subcultures of anime, video games, and sci-fi.
