On Monday June 19, in the context of Residency Unlimited’s (RU) partnership with Kings County, we are proud to present the work in progress of Charlie Gross, as Artist in Residence at Kings County, realized in collaboration with Nathaniel, a 22 year old transgender youth who was a recipient of services at Kings.

During his residency, Charlie Gross photographed and interviewed Nathaniel, both at Kings County and then outside of the hospital. Nathaniel is a transgender man whose family history of multi-generational homelessness, mental illness, substance abuse, and exposure to violence contributed to his brief stay at KCHC for depression and suicidal ideation. Nathaniel is an ambitious, charismatic and creative young man. In spite of his closeness to his family, he has struggled since adolescence to have his sexual orientation and then his transition accepted by his mother and is hoping to share his own story in order to advocate for LGBT and homeless youth. Charlie and Nathaniel have collaborated on a story about his life to be published soon in Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner’s Lenny Letter.

Over the course of the evening, Kings County’s Leticia Theodore Greene, Director of the Community Affairs Department and Carlos Rodriguez Perez, Director of the Wellness and Recovery Division will also engage with Charlie and Nathaniel, who will share his poems with the audience.

RU Talk: Charlie Gross, Artist in Residence at Kings County

Residency Unlimited and Kings County have established a partnership through which artists are hosted at the hospital campus to develop and deliver art projects. It is the aim of the collaboration to engage our community and those we serve through a positive and pleasurable experience.

NYC Health + Hospitals is committed to empowering Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) New Yorkers to live the healthiest life possible. King’s county supports civil rights and LGBTQ health equality. Our hospitals and health centers provide responsive, compassionate and respectful care in a welcoming environment. We train our health care providers to understand the special health needs of LGBTQ individuals. We have open visitation rights for all LGBTQ patients and families. And we have zero tolerance for discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

Charlie Gross‘ work at KCHC is being sponsored by Residency Unlimited and Economic Hardship Reporting Project.
