PAST – OPEN CALL – RU / Casita Maria 3 months residencies for NYC based artists in 2016 (Deadline: Monday Oct 12th, 2015)

Now in it’s 6th season, Casita Maria Center for Arts & Education and Residency Unlimited (RU) are continuing their partnership to create a community-based residency program based between Casita Maria’s facility in the South Bronx and Residency Unlimited’s space in Brooklyn.

This open call is available to three New York City based artists exclusively for three months residency each, between February and November 2016. A stipend of $1000 will be offered to the selected artists with the generous support from the Dedalus Foundation Institutional Initiatives Grant.

We are looking to work with artists for whom audience or community participation plays a major role in their practice and who will work alongside Bronx-based youth and their families as they develop their practices.

Conditions:

-Application Deadline: Monday Oct 12th, 2015 (Midnight)
-Residency Duration: 3 months each (3 slots available: Feb-Apr, May-July, & Aug-Oct)
-Stipend of $1000 offered to each artist.

What does this residency provide?

A two-fold experience with two vibrant organizations putting their resources together to present and disseminate the creative product to a broad range of audiences.

A free studio space for 3 months at Casita Maria. The studio space at Casita Maria will typically be open from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm each weekday. In addition, occasional weekends and evenings will be made available. Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education is a nonprofit community-based organization and home to the Bronx Studio School for Writer and Artists (BSSWA – a NYC 6th – 12th grade public school). The resident artist can work closely with the youth and families served by Casita Maria and BSSWA as well as other local residents and community-based social service and arts and cultural organizations.

From its space based at 360 Court Street in Brooklyn, Residency Unlimited (RU) will provide the selected artist with customized logistical support, enhanced networking opportunities and access to its general programming within the context of the international residency program. A public presentation of the new work developed will be organized in a format to be determined in conjunction with the artist and the RU staff.

What are the criteria for selection?

Besides quality of the artist’s work, the core criterion is the artist’s willingness to work with Casita Maria’s Bronx community as well as engage with the RU community and attend events.

Eligible applicants must be able to commit to spending 25 hours of time @ Casita Maria per month, with the purpose of executing a selected project.

A panel of curatorial staff at RU and Casita Maria will pre-select first round finalist. Final interviews will take place on Oct 16th. Finalists will be announced on Oct 19th, 2015.

This program is made possible with the generous support from the Dedalus Foundation Institutional Initiatives Grant.
