Bio/Statement:
Jamie Denburg Habie is the Co-Founder and Director of La Nueva Fábrica, a contemporary art space in Antigua, Guatemala that promotes creative experimentation through exhibitions, public programs and education, residencies, and multidisciplinary workshops. In 2022, La Nueva Fábrica is presenting GRITO [SCREAM], the first institutional survey in the Americas of the Guatemalan performance artist Regina José Galindo, curated by Maya Juracán. Accompanied by a catalogue and a rich pedagogical program, GRITO highlights the relevance of Galindo’s practice at a time when the Guatemalan State threatens to ban gay marriage, limit sexual education to the home and criminalize women’s autonomy over their own bodies. Recent exhibitions include the first mid-career survey of Antonio Pichillá Quiacaín, which explored the Maya Tzu’tujil worldview through a socio-political lens while problematizing European notions of formalism; REPÚBLICA, a critical view of 200 years of Guatemalan Statehood; and participation in the 22nd Bienal de Arte Paiz, one of the longest-standing biennials in Latin America.
