Bio/Statement:
Rosa Berland is an art historian, curator, and professor specializing in modern and contemporary art, migration, material culture, spirituality, and transnational identity. Through exhibitions, publications, and public programming, she examines how artists engage memory, ritual, labor, ecology, and cultural inheritance across histories of displacement and exchange. Her curatorial projects bring together interdisciplinary practices spanning painting, installation, photography, sculpture, textile work, and socially engaged art. Recent exhibitions include “New Practices in Contemporary Italian Diasporic Art” at the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute. Berland is currently working on book projects on immigrant artists in America and contemporary diasporic Italian artists.
Rosa’s selected curatorial projects include: Edward Boccia: Postwar American Expressionist, Calandra Institute, NY (2024–25); Road to Utopia, Aleph Contemporary, London, UK (2020). Among her publications and texts are Edward E. Boccia: Painter of Nightmares and Dreams, Hirmer Verlag/University of Chicago Press (2026); Material Transformations, Mixed Media Space, North Adams, MA (2026); The Fractured Earth and Sky, The Atomic Kid, Smallworks Press, Las Vegas, NV (2024).
