Bio/Statement:

Rory Torstensson is a Brooklyn based artist originally from Marblehead, Massachusetts. She received her BFA from the Art Academy of Cincinnati. She is the recipient of the Folger Purchase Award, 3 Arts Scholarship and the Constance McClure Scholarship. Her work has been exhibited at galleries including Susan Eley Gallery (NYC), the Contemporary Arts Center (Cincinnati), WavePool Gallery (Cincinnati), Roman Susan (Chicago), Pique (Kentucky), and the Clifton Cultural Arts Center (Cincinnati) and has been featured in publications such as Suboart Magazine, Tellus Zine, and Blending Magazine. Her work has been acquired for the permanent collection of the Art Academy of Cincinnati and private collections nationally.

Rory Torstensson is a figurative and narrative artist engaging her childhood of growing up by the ocean and the relationships she has had and lost along the way. Her figures engage notions of belonging, friendship, and intimacy between women as a muse for her paintings. She is balancing the history of figurative painting with the contemporary struggles of personal agency, and the need for emotional support networks. It is of great importance that these aspects of subject matter do not eclipse the power of process and physicality that these paintings exude. Rory’s brushwork and attention to detail brings the notion of pleasure to the forefront of viewing these paintings that often oscillate between joy and mourning.
