Bio/Statement:
Liza Goncharenko is a Ukrainian architect, urban designer and researcher at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp. During 2013–2017, she was Ukraine’s National Contact for the EASA (European Architecture Students Assembly ), later tutoring at EASA Tourist (Switzerland), EASA Rhizome (Finland), EASA Seanchaí (Ireland) and IDW Antwerp (Belgium). She co-curated SESAM (Small European Students of Architecture Meeting, 2021), a month-long international architecture event within the EASA network held in Slavutych, Ukraine – bringing together over 100 participants from more than 20 countries, focused on the theme ‘Poliklinika’ (clinic), exploring healthcare and its relationship to architecture, alongside lectures, discussions, performances, music events, and visits to the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone. Her work explores architecture, heritage, and landscape, with a focus on Ukraine’s reconstruction. During her residency at RU, Liza will expand Landscapes of Recovery, a long-term project examining environments shaped by war, fire, and extraction as ecological and cultural archives. Focusing on sites in Ukraine affected by Russia’s invasion, burned forests, and damaged river systems, she approaches these not as isolated cases but as part of broader planetary conditions shaped by conflict and uneven repair.
She has presented at many conferences, such as International Symposium on Embodied Culture, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium (2026); Prairie Conference 2026: Ukrainian Studies in Times of Global Transformations of the Humanities, University of Manitoba, Canada (2026); Exchange in Practice: ‘Building Between the Lines’, Nieuwe Instituut and the Flanders Architecture Institute (VAi), Rotterdam, The Netherlands (2026); The Contrapuntal Conference Bridging Narratives, The Hague, The Netherlands (2026); Writing For Living, A conversation on writing, architecture, value and culture in Ireland, IAF House, Dublin, Ireland (2025); MitMission Hop-In, Vanadzor, Armenia (2024). She took part in many residencies such as Irish Architecture Foundation Writing Residency, Dublin, Ireland (2025); Hospitalfield Artist Residency, Scotland (2025); Art OMI Architecture Residency, NY, USA (2025); Institute for Public Architecture Residency, NY, USA (2023). She regularly writes for magazines such as MAJA, The Contrapuntal, KERB, and AWC Journal.
