Bio/Statement:
Dominika Trapp’s artistic practice unfolds across three interconnected fields: intuitive painting, collaborative projects engaging with grassroot cultural histories, and museological interventions. In her individual work, she approaches intuitive painting as somatic praxis and artistic research – exploring the body as a ground of emancipation, embodied knowledge as a moral compass, and women’s agency within peasant culture. Parallel to this practice, she develops collaborative projects outside conventional contemporary art contexts, engaging with houses of culture in the Hungarian countryside, and the Hungarian dance-house movement through field research and collaborations with communities. Another strand of Trapp’s work involves artistic interventions in archives. Her doctoral research emerged from work with the trap collection of the Museum of Ethnography in Budapest, where she interprets the trap as a metacritical tool for examining institutional and methodological constraints within artistic research itself.
Dominika’s work has been featured in various biennials and triennals, most recently: The Body of the Peasant Woman, Biennale Matter of Art, Prague, Czechia (2024); Escaping Water, EKO 9, Triennial of Art and Environment, Maribor, Slovenia (2024); Entangled, Engaged, Ensnared, EVA International, Limerick, Ireland (2023). Among her recent group exhibitions are Kukania, Galeria Arsenal, Białystok, Poland (2025); ZONE1, Vienna Contemporary, Vienna, Austria (2025); Habitat, National Gallery, Budapest, Hungary (2025); SALT. CLAY. ROCK., nGbK, Berlin, Germany (2024); Soilmates, Hunt Kastner Gallery, Prague, Czechia (2024). Dominika Trapp’s awards and residencies include the CEAAC Residency, Strasbourg, France (2024); Esterházy Art Award, Budapest, Hungary (2023); Brno House of Arts Residency, Brno, Czechia (2022); MeetFactory Residency, Prague, Czechia (2021); VARP scholarship at Karlin Studios, Prague, Czechia (2020); VARP NY Artist in Residency Program, New York, USA (2019); AIR at Q21 Residency, Vienna, Austria (2018); and the Catalyst Prize by tranzit.org (2016).
