Join us for a creative workshop led by Graciela Cassel (2016 RU Alum) exploring monoprinting, a unique form of printmaking where each print is completely one-of-a-kind. Unlike other printmaking techniques that create multiple copies, a monoprint produces only a single impression, making every artwork original and unexpected.
During this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to apply ink or paint to a smooth, non-porous surface such as plexiglass. Using brushes, rollers, and other tools, you will experiment with both additive techniques—building up an image with ink—and subtractive techniques—removing ink to create marks, textures, and shapes. They will then transfer their design onto paper using either a printing press or hand-printing methods such as rubbing with a spoon or baren. The workshop will also introduce playful mixed-media approaches, including stencils, stamps, collage, and chine-collé, allowing you to create expressive, painterly, and spontaneous prints.
By the end of the session, participants will have created their own unique monoprints and gained an understanding of how experimentation, layering, and mark-making can bring energy and surprise to the printmaking process.
No previous printmaking experience is required. All materials will be provided.
This initiative is part of a series of 20 workshops designed to provide post residency support to RU’s local alumni artists. Curated by alum curator Hayley Ferber, the workshops are centered on the theme of creative engagement with the natural environment, inviting participants to explore processes of reuse, observation, material experimentation, and collective making.
