Man Barlett – Space on Earth

Description by Man Barlett:

“I’m thrilled to announce that the latest volume of SPACE ON EARTH is now available in physical space. On Earth! [cosmic rimshot with infinite reverb]

I’m too close to it and it’s too soon to have an adequate perspective, but I wanted to give some insight into my brain- and spirit-projections during its making. Spoilers ahead!

The two compositions were created entirely on my iPhone, with some minor vocal overdubs added, over the course of a couple months. Continuing in the tradition of my Drone Commute series, a lot of the composing was done en route to my day job on downtown-bound A trains (181st -> 14th ftw). Like most of my work lately, the titles reflect the dates the compositions were completed. Despite believing in the non-linearity of time, titling the work this way creates a manageable snapshot of where I happened to be on any given day, regardless of medium.

For SOE IV I wanted to expand the astral trails of sound, and to be able to listen to different elements orbit a decentralized core at different rates (i.e. in rounds). The result is a sort of ever-expanding and ever-evolving ambience that still feels grounded. I found myself listening to it a lot on my way to sleep, or when I needed a hazy background to offset the pointed, exterior world.

The clear cassette design is intended to mimic this sensation that I keep having, which is a sort of transparent, ever-reversing and forwarding, linked and discrete expression of all things and no things at once. I recently attempted a visual representation of this idea, but I wanted to apply the underlying force here as well. As for the cover art, it was created using a cube dispersion prism and a very old digital camera, and is intended to sync people to the mantra for the release, “spread your light.”

Oh, and you don’t need a cassette player to listen! It’s available on Bandcamp and everywhere digital music is sold/streamed.”
