Bio/Statement:
Marian Tubbs is an Australian artist who uses familiar materials in assemblage, photography and paint to investigate philosophical questions with form. A recurring theme in her work is how materiality intersects with notions of value, pleasure, and reality.
During her time with Residency Unlimited New York, Marian will be working towards a project with the Maldives Pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennale and an exhibition at Rooster Gallery, NY. She will realise a new body of sculptural work based on research into how precarious aesthetics draw from contemporary commodity fetishism and social movements such as Occupy Wall Street.
In addition to her solo practice Marian also exhibits with the art collectives, Slush, and Same. She has recently exhibited in, Here and Now, (Carriageworks), Sydney, Home is where one starts from, (Yuill Crowley), Sydney, Janis, (Alaska Projects), Sydney, Same, (Feltspace), Adelaide, Photo-Sculpture: Images, Objects, and Paradox, (MOP Projects), Sydney, Have you ever been to the House of Cashmere? Maybe we could go and just roll around sometime, (DB Project), Sydney, and Understanding Infinity, (Kings ARI), Melbourne. She has completed residencies at the Cite Internationale des Arts, Paris and Artspace, Sydney. Marian is currently undertaking a PhD at the College of Fine Arts, UNSW, where she also completed an MFA in 2010. Her work has been published in numerous publications including Art & Australia, Art Asia Pacific, Gertrude Contemporary, Un magazine, Runway magazine and has taught in Sculpture and Media Studies at the College of Fine Arts UNSW and at Notre Dame University.
