This hands-on workshop with artist Katya Grokhovsky (RU alum 2014) introduces participants to the possibilities of gel plate monoprinting, an accessible printmaking process that requires no press and can be practiced with minimal equipment. Using reusable gel printing plates, participants will create unique prints by experimenting with natural and recycled materials.
Through demonstrations of layering, masking, texture transfer, and direct pulling and printing techniques, participants will learn how to transform everyday and organic materials into compositions, capturing traces of both the natural and human-made. All levels are welcome.
Materials are provided, and participants will leave with their own prints.
*Participants are asked to gather and bring natural and found materials from their environments that they would like to experiment with, including any found paper that they might want to print on.
This initiative is part of a series of 20 workshops designed to provide post residency support to RU’s local alumni artists. Curated by alum curator Hayley Ferber, the workshops are centered on the theme of creative engagement with the natural environment, inviting participants to explore processes of reuse, observation, material experimentation, and collective making.
About
Katya Grokhovsky is a Ukrainian-born, New York City–based artist, educator, and the Founding Director of The Immigrant Artist Biennial. She is an interdisciplinary artist working in installation, video, painting, performance, and printmaking exploring migration, home and identity. She has participated in numerous residencies and fellowships, including the Keyholder AIR at LES Printshop, Ellis Beauregard Foundation residency, The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts Studio Program, Padnos Distinguished AIR at Grand Valley State University, Columbus State University Visiting AIR, Windgate AIR at the University of Arkansas–Fort Smith, California Studio: Manetti Shrem Visiting AIR at UC Davis Ekard AIR at Bucknell University, Sculpture Space, MAD Museum Studio Residency, Santa Fe Art Institute, Ox-Bow School of Art, Atlantic Center for the Arts, Wassaic Project Residency, RU Residency, Studios at MASS MoCA, Watermill Center, among others.
She is a recipient of numerous awards and grants, including Brooklyn Arts Council Grants, the New American Fellowship, ArtSlant Prize, FST StudioProjects Fund, NYFA Fiscal Sponsorship, and the Australia Council for the Arts ArtStart Grant. Grokhovsky’s work has been widely exhibited at institutions and galleries such as the Brooklyn Museum, Museum of Arts and Design, Manetti Shrem Museum of Art, Crocker Art Museum, Rhona Hoffman Gallery, Ceysson & Bénétière, Smack Mellon, BRIC, Hudson Valley MOCA, Tiger Strikes Asteroid, Flux Factory, and many more. Grokhovsky has taught in MFA programs at SVA and CUNY City College and holds an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, a BFA from the Victorian College of the Arts, and a BA in Fashion from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia.
