Bio/Statement:
Paola Fiterre is a Cuban artist based in New York whose work centers on migration and the female experience. Working across performance, photography, video, and installation, she uses her own body as both material and site of inquiry. Her practice examines displacement, endurance, intimacy, and the invisible labor carried by women navigating borders, relationships, and systems of power. Recent performances such as Breathe (2023), Forma (2023), and Cyanotype Dress (2023) explore vulnerability and interdependence through simple but physically demanding actions. In a new piece, Crossed Line, audience members help her cross a line by dragging, lifting, or holding her hand, transforming spectators into participants and exposing the tension between autonomy and reliance. Her work invites collective witnessing while questioning who carries whom, and at what cost.
Paola’s recent exhibitions include: Volver a Regresar, NYLAAT & PTM Contemporary, Governors Island, New York, NY (2023); Unspoken Rituals: Paola Fiterre & Jamie Ho, ChaShama, New York, NY (2023); show with Renee Cox and Katelyn Kopenhaver, Pen & Brush Gallery, New York, NY (2019). She has participated in many residency programs: Open Studios Presentation, Espacio 23, Miami, USA (2025); The 2024 CINTAS Foundation Sondra Gilman González-Falla Fellowship in Photography for Cuban artists (2024); The Vermont Studio Center (2022); En Foco Photography Fellowship (2022); The Tory Burch and The International Center of Photography “A New New York” artists Fellowship (2021); the Pocantico Center of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund (2019); The International Center of Photography New Media Grant (2019). Paola Fiterre’s work is present in collections such as The Collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Sondra Gilman and Celso González-Falla Collection, The Elaine Goldman private collection, and The Kohn Family private collection.
