Bio/Statement:

Tsvetomira Borisova is the recipient of the 2024 BAZA Award for young contemporary artists in Bulgaria.

The main themes that shape Tsvetomira Borisova’s artistic practice are the individual’s connection with their environment and its deviations—through feelings of alienation, escapism, but also intimacy as a starting point for these phenomena. In her work, Tsvetomira addresses universal psychological processes that are often “unpopular” in the contemporary culture of hyperproductivity—such as the exhibition “Changes,” which deals with the decision to quit. Her work also comments on phenomena from popular culture and intertwines them with historical and mythological narratives, analyzing and speculatively reconstructing them in relation to present-day reality. Examples include the exhibitions “Gaslight, Gatekeep, Girlboss,” where the artist recreates the attributes of the successful woman, such as a leash on the three-headed dog Cerberus, and “Death at the Dinner Table: An Exploration of the Case of Johann Schobert and the Poisonous Mushrooms,” which examines the poisoning of the 18th-century French composer with poisonous mushrooms from the perspective of contemporary sciences. The artist uses recognizable images of the present in constructing her narratives, weaving into her work figures such as the Kennedy family, characters from the Bulgarian TV series “Dunav Bridge”, Dasha Nekrasova, Bella Hadid, Grimes, and others (text credit: Boyana Djikova).

In 2022, she was the resident artist at Sarieva Art Atelier, which concluded with her first solo show – “Cool S“ (2022). Some of her other solo shows are: “A Place to Rest“ (2022) at Dupka Contemporary – Plovdiv; “Death at the Dinner Table: An Exploration of the Case of Johann Schobert and the Poisonous Mushrooms” (2023) at ГАРА – Sofia; “Changes” (2023), curator Boyana Djikova at Charta, Sofia. Among her group shows are the editions of Sofia Art Week, “Market of Desire” (2021), an independent project of Boyana Djikova and Aaron Roth, “View With a Room” (2023), a pop-up of POSTA at Rosa Luxembourg str., Berlin.

In 2016 Tsvetomira Borisova received her diploma in Ceramics from New Bulgarian University. She was an intern at the Union Of Bulgarian Artists (2016) and at Swimming Pool, Sofia (2018), and took part in various educational programs such as New Creative Academy (2021) and School Of Kindness (2021).
