A residency connects a person to a place in a certain period of time. Seven international artists and one US-based artist made that choice for New York. In Residency at RU brings together this eclectic group of multi-disciplinary artists whose residencies were either postponed or interrupted in March 2020 because of the pandemic. Finally here, these artists are exposed to the vibrant art scene of this city, becoming part of its creative fabric. For the show they will occupy a vacant storefront on the Upper East Side, exploring and exchanging their reflections and processes with new work, and ultimately giving back to our community.

In his canvases David Almeida creates what he refers to as “intimacy of a culture or people” which are subtly manifested in landscape, resulting in concepts of memory, body, phantasmagoria and optical perception. Téo Betin builds sculptures from found wood materials recuperated in the city. They appear on an architectural scale and exist neither solely in the realm of architecture nor as formal objects, but somewhere in between such liminal spaces and practices. Sandra Eula Lee reframes and transforms material artifacts within her industrial and hand-made forms. Shaped by ideas of development in urban and rural contexts in the U.S., South Korea, and China, the artist explores relationships between labor, ethics of making, and our built environment. In her videos, Eva Giolo places a particular focus on the female experience, employing experimental and documentary strategies to explore themes of intimacy, permanence and memory, along with the analyses of language and semiotics. Wawrzyniec Gucewicz works in large-scale and colorful figurative paintings, touching on themes ranging from the psychological to the socio-political, ideas and inventions and the times we live in. In his large drawings in ink and colored pencil on paper, Tobias Nussbaumer juxtaposes imaginary or digital spaces with real architecture by combining classical art mediums with cutting edge technology. Dominique Uldry’s photographs investigate topics related to architecture, urban spaces, and cities such as  recent explorations of New York, while researching conditions of life and aesthetic experiences. Johannes Willi strives for transformative processes with sculpture and performance that contribute to notions of coexistence and collaboration, and the processes by which classical attributions and identities of so-called art are manifested.

The exhibition is organized by RU Guest Curator Lu Solano. We are grateful to Chashama for hosting this exhibition.
