Proposal: “Dancing in the Rain” – collaborative art residency experience at Brazilian Rain Forest

Proponent Artist: Carolina Paz
Part of the project “Body and Territory: Flow, Contagion and Disappearance – Brazil / USA – 2018/2020”, “Dancing in the Rain” concerns a collaborative artistic experience to be developed at the Kaaysá Art Residence.

About the project “Body and Territory: flow, contagion and disappearance”:
A series of artistic, critical and theoretical researches, developed in Brazil and the United States, involving  artists, communities, experts in different fields of knowledge and interested public who want to develop poetic, critical and theoretical contents on what is “Body and Territory” from three key concepts: flow, contagion and disappearance.

The project is divided into two parts:

– the first involves three collaborative actions that address issues related to identity, interchange and community;
– the second relates to the production of content and knowledge through textual and audiovisual exhibitions, debates and publications.

About the proposal “Dancing in the Rain”:
“Dancing in the Rain” has the objective of promoting the production of poetic and critical contents that make us think about what is “Body and Territory”, in a context of artistic residence far from large urban centers, that can engage in such production, in a horizontal and collaborative way, artists and local community.

For 21 days, from 4 to 25 February 2019, at the Kaaysá International Art Residence, located on the beach of Boiçucanga, SP, Carolina Paz (proponent artist) will organize critical and poetic exchanges between artists and representatives of the local community (Boiçucanga beach is located on the south coast of the municipality of São Sebastião, close to environmental reserves of Mata Atlântica, is inhabited by indigenous communities, fishermen and people living from local tourism).

Will be selected by Carolina 16 to 20 collaborating artists (residents) who are interested in participating in the following dynamic:

1- each week of the residence a subject will be chosen in debate with the resident artists next to representatives of the local community – which is equivalent to a cycle within the proposed dynamics;

2 – the chosen subject will be developed poetically and critically by participants (residents and community volunteers who want to participate) individually but collaboratively (ie, dialogues, exchanges, interactions should be part of the process of creating images, texts , objects etc);

3- at the end of each week there will be a new debate to present and discuss the experiences and materials produced from the chosen theme, thus closing a cycle;

4 – the proponent artist will be responsible for the general recording of such experiences, for the organization of the materials produced and made herself available for counseling and mediation among those involved;

4- will be developed 3 cycles (one per week);

5- at the end of the third cycle, the corresponding debate should include a Carolina Paz presentation with records that try to account for the totality of the experience, as well as to refer to a possible continuity / unfolding of the project in the same place in one or two years;

6 – in parallel, if they wish, resident artists can develop other projects in parallel, without compromising the proposed collaborative dynamics.

About participation:
Interested artists must send to Carolina Paz until August 31, 2018 a letter of intent that demonstrates the motivations that justify their participation in the project, a portfolio of at least 8, a maximum of 12 images and a CV summarized in up to 2 pages (all material must be in a single PDF file of up to 15MB, including links to audio and visual materials if applicable).

Send the file (single, in PDF, up to 15MB) to the email contato@carolinapaz.com.

U$ 1,000.00 (this amount is reduced by approximately 40% of the total value of the residence, as Kaaysá support to the project).

The selected artists must pay the residence costs to the bank account of the residence administration (Kaaysá) in Brazil, to be informed in the selection response (if it is positive). It will be possible to negotiate installments up to 3 times the amount (to be negotiated, after confirmation of the selection) as long as the total payment does not pass from 14 November.
If payment is not made by the deadline, the artist selected will be automatically disqualified giving rise to an alternate (from the backup list).
The amount paid corresponds to the lodging and access to the following resources in Kaaysá: printer, photographic development laboratory, carpentry machinery, ceramic kiln and audio and sound studio. All rooms contain one or two beds, fan, table and minibar. The space has collective kitchens available to residents, bicycles and internal parking.
