Javier M. Rodríguez’s practice focuses on the translation of the moving image.
His video installations, as well as his sculptures and his collages are based on investigations regarding the cinematographic narrative and the possibilities that exist outside the screen. For INT. VITRINA – DÍA, Rodríguez gathers a series of works that are related thematically, using formal resources (cinema time that is “materialized” in paper, fabrics or metals) and defragmented at the same time by cutting, folding or degrading such materials. Time can only be understood by a progression between three states; past-present-future and in the same way in order for any narrative to occur, at least three acts must take place successively. This is mere reductionism, however, it makes visible an abstract three-time structure that is always a constant in any story. For the artist, this structure is the starting point for the work that is exhibited, in A fold, to cut S2 (2018), a film scene is projected on a fabric hanging on a wall that contains two folds (three parts) and the time of the scene is reorganized by the surface that contains it. The fold is a temporary cut and at the same time allows three acts to happen simultaneously.
