MAPPING – ART ACTIONS (TAIWAN-NORTH AMERICA)

Join us tonight for “Mapping-Art Actions (TAIWAN-NORTH AMERICA)” featuring 3 performances by ArTrend Performance Group and the Taiwanese artists Wuma WATAN, Tzu-chi YEH and Liping TING. In their attempt to destabilize notions of gender, sexuality, work, nature, and politics, these artists explore different body languages and confront them to the local audiences they encounter, most recently in Canada and now New York.

Founded in 2003 by Tzu-chi Ye, ArtTrend Performance Group was seminal in introducing performance art in Taiwan and encouraging audiences to get involved, and promoting Taiwanese performance art internationally. Bringiing together different performance artists, the group has performed extensively localy and internationally. Venues include Taiwan Asia Performance Art Meetings, On The Way: ArTrend International Performance Art Meetings, and A(rt) Nest of Nuts Group Performance. Most recently, ArtTrend Performance Group performed in the 19th edition of the Quebec Rencontres Internationales d’art performance (RiAP).

Liping TING is an interdisciplinary artist, born at Taiwan and worked at Paris from 1989 to 2012. She studied Philisophy at Taipei Changchi University and got MA in Theater Education of Paris III Sorbonne Nouvelle (master theme on Beckett theater and Cage contemporary music aesthetics). She was in residency at Taipei artist village of Bao-Zang Hill for sounding installation and visual poetry. She is active in different collaboration with experimental musicians, and take part in most of improvisation music festivals in France. Her recent Polyphony work “Light Action” is a piece participated by blind people, recording their perception by sharing art action and sound-light installation to them.

Wuma WATAN is an artist and the director of WaterField studio in Taiwan. From aboriginal issue of Taiwan, his topic will be focus on community’s resistance under the globalization impact on the community activity. Wuma is a member of Atayal tribe from Jianshih Township, Hsinchu County. Since presenting the performance art piece “No Photography” in 2004, he has also been participating in festival and events around the world

Tzu-chi YEH is the founder and director of ArTrend Performance Group based in Tainan/Taiwan. Many of her works deal with self-healing, woman experience, animal right, nature, relations, history, as well as site-specific, among other things. With a background of literature, she had worked as an editor, a lecturer, and a freelance translator/writer before she turned to performance art in 2002. She has performed in different events/festivals/museums/galleries of Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Philippine, China, Myanmar, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Finland, Israel, and United States. She founded ArTrend Performance Group in 2003, and has organized quite a few domestic or international performance art events/festivals.
