PAST – ArteEast Residencies for artists based in the Middle East and North Africa.

ArteEast Residencies are open to artists based in the Middle East and North Africa, including the Arab region and Turkey. In an effort to stay true to our mission of facilitating access to career development for artists from the MENA region, preference is given to worthy applicants who otherwise do not have ready access or opportunities to residencies and travel to the United States.

All ArteEast residencies provide for living space, round trip travel from the resident’s home country and a stipend. Residencies with our partners are concluded with an ArteEast CONNECT extension in New York City, which will consist of a curated schedule of meetings with art professionals (curators, gallerists, programmers, etc.), as well as presentation and community engagement opportunities in concert with ArteEast’s various partners throughout New York City.

In 2016, RU is pleased to partner with ArteEast to offer two distinct residency opportunities:


Residency Unlimited | Sculpture Space Residency

Dates: June 1-July 14th, 2016 (Residency Unlimited) / July 15th-September 9 (Sculpture Space) / September 10-18 (ArteEast CONNECT)

Application Deadline: March 15, 2016
Decision Announced: April 15, 2016

Description: This residency combines a 6-week residency at Residency Unlimited in Brooklyn, NY with an 8-week residency immediately afterward at Sculpture Space in Utica, NY.

This residency will be most suited to: Artists who need time to fully conceive a project, and then realize it. The Residency Unlimited residency does not include private studio space, but a shared work/discussion space with other artists, creating an ideal environment in which to exchange and refine ideas and plan for a project. The Sculpture Space residency includes personal living and studio space as well as opportunities to connect with the local community, which includes the fourth-largest refugee population in the United States, and a beautiful community garden.

Residency Unlimited Residency

Dates: August 1-September 12th, 2016 / ArteEast CONNECT September 13th-18th, 2016

Decision Announced: April 15, 2016

Description: This 6-week residency provides artists with a vibrant community of artists and arts professionals and a shared work/discussion space in which to conceive new work or refine a concept in progress.

This residency will be most suited to: Artists who need time to fully conceive a project, or who are looking to refine a current concept, and who will thrive in a shared space and in the cosmopolitan, multi-cultural atmosphere of New York City.

To apply, please have the following ready:

• PDF Portfolio that includes your works over the past 2 years. (max 8mb)

*Application Supplement for all ArteEast Residencies: In 2016, ArteEast is endeavoring to forge a variety of community engagement opportunities for all of our artists in residence, from one-day community workshops with local children to panel discussions and presentations with academics and arts professionals. We ask that all residents include a supplementary statement summarizing any experience they may have in arts education, community engagement, and public presentations, along with ideas of how they might like to use the ArteEast residency to engage American audiences in their work and ideas during their time in the United States.
