RU Workshop: Direct Animation on 16mm Film. A workshop by Paola Guzmán Figueroa

Tuesday November 3, 2026 | 2:00 – 4:00pm

Location: Residency Unlimited, 360 Court Street, Brooklyn, NY 11231

Paola Guzmán Figueroa (2023 RU Alum) returns to Residency Unlimited to lead a hands-on workshop exploring direct animation on 16mm film, introducing participants to experimental filmmaking without the need for a camera or darkroom.

During the workshop, participants will experiment with drawing, painting, scratching, and perforating 16mm film, as well as intervening on existing filmed footage. Through playful experimentation with images, textures, colours, and compositions, participants will discover different ways of creating moving images.

The workshop will conclude with a collective screening of the material using a 16mm film projector. No previous filmmaking experience is required.

All materials will be provided.

During her visit to New York, she will also present her expanded cinema performance Generational Traces at MONO NO AWARE on October 23, 2026, at 7 PM (33 Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn). MONO NO AWARE has been an important space for the development of her artistic practice and experimentation with analogue film.
