Please join us to experience “Unwavering“, a new and immersive installation created by the Cuban artist Jose Capaz. Capaz defines the Unwavering series as emerging from a state of renewal. “In many ways, Unwavering remains deeply connected to my past, yet it is reborn through a symbolism I have previously explored—the tree—but now approached with a new intention, a new will, and a new energy shaped by my present and future as I establish myself in New York City. It is important for me to begin again from the very beginning. This is why I have conceived the “Unwavering” works as large-scale charcoal drawings—drawings that, in the past, preceded the production of my paintings. Now, however, the act of drawing takes on a more installative dimension where the symbol of the tree is closely linked to the will of humankind. The tree, as an immovable living being of nature, one that lacks mobility, possesses an immense will to survive everything around it: fire, drought, climate change, natural disasters, and even the will of humankind itself. In this sense, I establish a relationship between the tree’s will and my own, as relocating to New York also implies enduring and withstanding whatever may come. Symbolically, rebirth means starting from zero—growing again, putting down new roots here, and in some way altering the course of my history, without forgetting my past, without forgetting where I come from, or everything I have built throughout my career. It is about carrying that past into the present and toward the future. This series connects me on all of these levels.”

About:

José Capaz’s work is rooted in a process of introspection, in which he reflects on his past and interprets history from a psychological perspective. Through this process, he offers new readings, narrates, and reconstructs his artistic language. He creates scenographies filled with symbols drawn from memory, ultimately constructing landscapes that are, in a way, endless. These landscapes always reach toward infinity and space, a theme he considers fundamental to his paintings. This is why he often produces works of large dimensions, which may be connected to the trauma of being born in a small town that, to him, is a big place full of industrialization and machinery.
