Join us for an insightful talk with current resident artist, Hamza Halloubi, and Majlis NY Director, Lara Arafeh. In his practice, Halloubi thoughtfully examines themes of migration, identity, and cultural memory. Known for his introspective video pieces, he explores the intimate, often fragmented experiences of those who navigate multiple identities and histories. Featured excerpts of video works from ‘To Leave’, ‘Writing Back’, and ‘Un après-midi à’ will highlight strategies the artist employs as he delves into post-colonial narratives, cross-cultural exchanges, and the complexities of place and belonging. This conversation will offer a deep dive into Halloubi’s artistic practice, inviting audiences to reflect on the quiet power of personal narrative and the art of translating memory into visual form.

About the speakers
Hamza Halloubi is a multi-disciplinary artist from Morocco, who currently lives and works in Brussels. Halloubi holds a Master’s in Fine Arts from the ENSAV la Cambre, in Brussels. Halloubi uses a variety of mediums such as video, painting, text, voice and installation, conceiving his work as “writing back” to Western Modernist narratives. In his work, Halloubi insists on the place to carry out his artistic approach with the aim of moving the periphery to the center and shifting the relationship between the local and the global, the north, and the south.
Lara Arafeh is a curator, writer, and researcher based in Brooklyn. She also serves as the director of Majlis NY, a platform dedicated to promoting cultural exchange and showcasing voices from underrepresented communities. Her research delves into decolonial methodologies, narrative history, and the intricate intersections of culture, identity, and feminism. Lara completed a curatorial fellowship at the Baltimore Museum of Art, where her research centered on contemporary Native American art and history, further expanding her expertise in global Indigenous narratives.
