Please join us at the occasion of Jose Capaz’ new installation at the Cuban Artists Fund Studio. Rooted in introspection, “Bending Time (My Past Is Here)” includes a very large scale charcoal drawing realized by the artist during his residency. This new work is marked by the artist’s personal interpretation of history and memory directly referencing the industrial city of Regla where he was born and raised and that is located on the outskirts of Havana. Capaz grew up looking out of his window onto oil refineries emitting vast quantities of fire and smoke. The flame like motifs depicted are simultaneously evocative of the vital energy of the Caribbean but also industrial contamination afflicting the bay of Havana.
“I see my practice as a continuous process — an infinite work in constant transformation and expansion across time and space. In this case, the challenge was scale: my work is usually large in format, but here I decided to build the installation through smaller pieces…The installation unfolds as a large charcoal-drawn backdrop that reveals the structural and gestural process preceding painting. On top of this surface, small oil paintings are arranged as a map or collage. ‘Bending Time (My Past Is Here)’ speaks of that possibility of folding time — of how the past can become present and continue to transform. Each fragment of the installation stands as an autonomous piece yet remains part of a greater whole, reflecting the way I understand my practice: an ongoing search where time, memory, and matter intertwine.”
