RU artist, Ian Ginsburg (1988) and Russian born New York-based artist, Vitaly Komar (1943), are artists of different generations, with a shared relation to Nonconformist Art in the Soviet Union. During their talk, they will touch upon the reconstruction of characters and histories as an artistic method in both a political and social context, as well as in past and present Russia/US contexts.
……..
Vitaly Komar was born in 1943 in Moscow and currently lives and works in NYC. In 1967 he graduated from Stroganov Art School in Moscow, Russia (Former U.S.S.R) and in the early 1970s he and fellow artist, Alex Melamid, founded the Sots Art movement, a unique version of Soviet Pop and Conceptual Art, which combines the principles of Dadaism and Socialist Realism.
Together Komar and Melamid also worked in Post-Art, pioneering multi-stylistic images prescient of post-modernism, popular in the 80s. They collaborated on various conceptual projects, ranging from painting and performance to installation, public sculpture, photography, music, and poetry. Their collaborations extended to working artists as well and included; Douglas Davis, Fluxus member Charlotte Moorman and Andy Warhol, among others. Komar continued working in tandem with Melamid until 2003. Since then Komar has continued to produce and show works independently.
Major exhibitions include Museum of Modern Art (NY), Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY), Moscow Museum of Modern Art (Moscow), Musee des Arts Decoratifs (Paris), Dokumenta 8 (Kassel), Venice Biennial, Moscow Biennial, Musee de Louvre (Paris), Brooklyn Museum of Art (NY).
