Residency Unlimited is pleased to present Bronx! Fashion! Revolution!, a community-based art project realized by the artist Kevin Klein in conjunction with teenagers engaged in Casita Maria’s after school program. Over the course of his residency, the Austrian artist Walter Steinacher (aka Kevin Klein) conducted a series of workshops where the students revamp their old clothes and, through the process, question their relationship with brands and their participation in an alienating consumerist culture. In promoting ‘upcycling’ – a recycling that implies the production of new products of better ethical value – this interactive project raises awareness and encourages collaboration, collective action and creation as correctives against individualist and materialist attitudes. For the event at RU, the students will act as models of a fashion show and will present their own creations to the New York public.

“Bronx Fashion Revolution” was realized within the framework of the RU/Casita Maria partnership

Steinacher’s residency (February and March 2013) benefits from funds from Kultur Stadt Salzburg and the Austrian Cultural Forum New York.
