Join us for this first workshop organized by VoM Artists in Residence with Weeds, Wildflowers and Wanderers: Botanical Medicines Walking With Us. Together with VoM artist-in-residence Tanika I. Williams, visitors will craft smudge sticks with foraged mugwort from the artist’s garden while exploring the history of the Lenape people and tulip trees on Governors Island.
About the artist
Tanika I. Williams (b. St. Andrew, Jamaica; lives and works in Brooklyn, NY) is an award-winning filmmaker and performance artist. She investigates women’s use of movement, mothering, and medicine to produce and pass on the ancestral wisdom of ecology, spirituality, and liberation. Williams holds a BA from Eugene Lang College, New School, and an MDiv from Union Theological Seminary. Her films have been screened in national and international festivals and broadcast on American television. Williams has been awarded fellowships and residencies at NYU Tisch School, New York Foundation for the Arts, Hi-ARTS, Cow House Studios, MORE Art, and BRIC. About the Voices of Multiplicity (VoM) Artist Residency Program
The 2024 Voices of Multiplicity (VoM) Artist Residency Program is led by RU Guest Curator Ayelet Danielle Aldouby with artists Dennis RedMoon Darkeem, Immanuel Oni, Tanika I. Williams, and Shanjana Mahmud. From May through October, the four artists will work at Governors Island in their work space at the RU House located at 404B Colonels Row where they will invite the audience to participate in a series of workshops and art interventions.
Conceived in 2022 and curated by Ayelet Danielle Aldouby, the Voices of Multiplicity (VoM) Artist Residency Program offers opportunities for artists to gain cross-disciplinary competencies in socially engaged art, dismantle barriers to entry into the art-world and provide access to resources.
The 2024 VoM III Artist Residency Program is supported by The Brooklyn Public library (BPL) and the Roman Foundation.
