RU Exhibition: Open Studio by Pàulla Scàvazzini

Please join us for an open studio event organized by Residency Unlimited (RU) and Art in Brackets™. We invite you to discover works in progress by RU artist Pàulla Scàvazzini, which in turn will be featured in an immersive installation at the Kaliner Gallery in a duo show “Between Utopias and the Abyss” by Pàulla and Austin Fields, opening on April 23.

The core of Pàulla’s research centers on deeply gestural paintings with a strong chromatic focus, drawing on the Brazilian tropical botanical universe to reflect the complexities of life in a country that was colonized. Her practice also celebrates the strength and vitality of the historically subjugated feminine, expressed through fluid gestures and radiant colors that resist erasure and affirm presence. Fragments of vegetation and organic elements are “exploded” into gestures, stains, and fields of color, shifting from figuration toward abstract atmospheres that hover between landscape and ruin, violence and recomposition. In this search, she addresses the tensions and crises of the contemporary world without abandoning an affirmative perspective, in which light, openness, and the possibility of breathing space still appear as structuring forces of the work.

Finally, her smaller-scale paintings, such as those from the series Cápsulas (Capsules), resemble poetic windows or refuges. Each piece — a possible fragment of a larger painting, like part of a puzzle or its synthesis — acts as an invitation to memory, contemplation, and spatial reconfiguration. They provoke the body to virtually reproduce the pictorial gesture across walls, like a projector of possibilities and illusions. The viewer is urged to rethink painting as a space of personal experience, opening horizons for an interdisciplinary dialogue between art, nature, architecture, and the activation of the senses.

Pàulla Scàvazzini’s practice constructs utopias primarily through paintings of strong color intensity and an atmospheric, synesthetic character, developed across multiple supports and scales — from small formats that function as capsules or poetic windows, fragments or condensed syntheses of a broader pictorial universe, inviting memory, contemplation, and a sensitive reconfiguration of space — to architectural dimensions, echoing her background in architecture. Her work is consistently marked by gestural expression and a playful interplay between reality and fiction. She investigates essential aspects of painting — color, facture, light, composition, and scale — in dialogue with the expression of a historically subjugated feminine force. Drawing on references to Brazilian tropical botany and reflecting on Brazil’s history as a colonized country, her paintings oscillate between natural exuberance, environmental collapse, and the glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel, articulating both the apocalyptic chaos of the global conjuncture and a luminous outlook on the future.
