Residency Unlimited

Artwork description:
Peter Depelchin develops large-scale allegoric drawings and videos. He grew up on the Western Flemish seaside, in a flat land battered by the cold Northern wind and sea spume where old master masterpieces prevail .‘Voguing Jesus’ is a series of 5 sketches featuring a Jesus figure that the artist realized during his residency at RU in 2016 for the video-projects ‘Visions’ and ‘Biblioteca’. These works were part of the exhibition “Afterimage” curated by Rachel Steinberg at Incube Arts (New York). In Depelchin’s mind, “Jesus is a very feminine-like figure, in the sense that (let’s say mostly) his body is elegantly formed and positioned (even when it’s depicted on the cross). Also, when you put these lying Christ figures upright, they seem to be dancing, or at least moving. So the motionless position of a dying person becomes a body that is very much alive.”
