Bio/Statement:
Janine Mackenroth’s multidisciplinary practice addresses pressing global issues. In 2013, she detonated 194 old loaves of bread arranged as a map of the earth – symbolizing the world’s 194 nations – with the happening “BREAKING BREAD” as a comment on world hunger. Every three seconds, a loaf exploded, the same time interval it takes for someone somewhere in the world to die from the effects of famine. With the installation ONE SECOND she raised awareness of climate change by inviting the entire population of the city of Munich to touch and walk on the symbol “I” that she had painted in white paint and that covered the entire space of the Olympic Park in Munich.
Mackenroth’s recent work with nail polish and other cosmetics is to be understood as a commentary on a male dominated art world. The shedding of gallons of expensive nail polish is a self-assured arising in front of this art world, poured out feminism on canvas. The materiality and conceptual organization of her work and projects seeks to challenge issues that affect equally society, environment and herself.
