Lakkos Artists Residency
Disciplines: All Disciplines.
Location: Heraklion, Crete, Greece
Duration: 2 weeks preferred but flexible.
Eligibility: All diciplines
Support: Private bedroom, studio space, paints for murals.
Costs: 150 Euros per week artist fee. 200 for a couple.
The artists residency is located right in the middle of Heraklion's old towns creative centre. The house is actually three houses owned by one family. All houses stood abandoned for between 10 and 18 years before becoming an artists residency. Much restoration has taken place but there is still work to be done! The area is very quiet except for the older locals and their sometimes barking dogs. The residency is run by Australian visual artist Mathew Halpin. Mathew lives at the residency along with a permanent writer in residence.
The houses were once one big Turkish house built many years ago. In the 1920's with the Asia Minor/ Greek population exchange Greeks bought the house and changed it to three. Now two of the houses are used for various artistic purposes with three studio spaces.
Mathew Halpin who organises the residency is a visual artist. We want to encourage all artistic adventures. The houses have private and communal spaces. It is a new residency and we are very flexible at the moment. Gallery space/ performance space can be booked for the end of the artists stay. Or if the artists just want to come and work in piece and do no presentation at the end this is also fine. Like the Greek islands we dont want to put too many rules down.
