Constructed of stainless steel and LED lighting strings New Hypothetical Continents maps the limits and contours of a fictional landmass.
The work closely references an illustration from Lewis Spence’s History of Atlantis and its subsequent appropriation by Robert Smithson in the wake of his failed Island of Broken Glass project. Maddock also draws from colonial Australian landscape painting, and our fascination with the spectacle, to explore the juncture between romantic idealism, atrocity and the quixotic pursuit of the Utopic.
